Student Teaching Abroad

Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Middle Level Education, and History-Social Science Teacher Education majors have the opportunity to complete a portion of their student teaching placement abroad.

Alcalá de Henares, Spain

  • Open to Early Childhood, Elementary, and Middle Level Education majors earning an ESL endorsement
  • 8-week placements in bilingual schools arranged by the Universidad de Alcalá
  • Live with a local family and enjoy trips to nearby cities such as Madrid

Placement Process

Illinois Placement

  • Your department will work with the Teacher Education Center to secure student teaching placements for you time in Illinois.
  • Your placement will be 8-weeks and you will enroll in one section of a Student Teaching course (6 credit hours).

Abroad Placement

  • The Study Abroad Team will work with our Host Institutions abroad to secure student teaching placements for your time in England or Spain.
  • Your placement will be 8-10 weeks in length, and the Study Abroad Team will enroll you in a study abroad section of a Student Teaching course (5-6 credit hours).

Cost Information

The Study Abroad Team provides an Estimated Budget for each student teaching program.

  • The budget does not include the cost of tuition, fees, or living expenses associated with the 8-week Illinois teaching placement.
  • The budget does cover the costs of tuition, room & board, and other associated expenses for the abroad student teaching placement.

You can also view budgets by going to our Program Budget page. To view budgets on the program budget page, select the term of interest and scroll to the corresponding country. Under each country the program budgets are linked.

Academic Credit

Early Childhood, Elementary, and Middle Level Education majors:

  • It is your responsibility to enroll in the STT 399 course corresponding with your major for 6 credit hours while student teaching in Illinois.
  • The Study Abroad Team will enroll you in the study abroad section of STT 399 for 6 credit hours while abroad.

History-Social Science Teacher Education majors:

  • It is your responsibility to enroll in the STT 399a43 course for 6 credit hours for student teaching in Illinois.
  • The Study Abroad Team will enroll you in the study abroad section of STT 399a43 for 5 credit hours while abroad.
